Working a corporate job back in 2010, Matt was spending a lot of time in Sydney, working by day, then frequenting a local establishment with colleagues of a night. One thing that really stood out was apple cider really starting to make a resurgence. Coming from the “Apple Isle” and being aware of the general downturn in the industry, an idea started to form…
Months later, after copious amounts of “research” and spending weekends in the Huon Valley meeting growers, Captain Blighs Tasmanian Cider was born. A space was secured in the old George Adams brewery (of the Tattslotto fame) in the centre of Hobart. Cider making equipment was procured and the trails began.
The OI guys all worked together to create a brand from scratch that was unique in product, received praise from the market and provided real world experience into what a new business faces when entering the market.
In 2014, talented brewer and all round good guy Steve Brooks took over the helm of Captain Blighs, now operating a successful brewery alongside the existing cider operation.
